Dimapur, June 2 (MExN): The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Nagaland Unit has appealed to universities and autonomous colleges in Nagaland to end the uncertainty around university examinations by promoting students without conducting examinations.
The appeal was made in separate letters to the Vice Chancellors of Nagaland University, St Joseph University, Dimapur; ICFAI University, Dimapur and principals of autonomous colleges – Patkai Christian College, St Joseph College, Jakhama and Kohima Science College, Jotsoma.
In the letters, State NSUI President X Chophika Sumi and General Secretary Khrieketoulie Metha said the academic year has been disrupted due to the unprecedented nationwide lockdown to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. With the delayed academic calendar and the possibility of online examination without course-work being complete, there is great trepidation among the students, it said.
The NSUI maintained that online exams are likely to be discriminatory to the underprivileged students given the highly uneven access to infrastructure ad connectivity. It is also inadvisable to conduct exams without completion of course work in a physical class, it said.
As such, the NSUI demanded that all students in the year one and two be promoted without examinations. It also suggested that extra classes for course work missed should be conducted after universities/colleges re-open.
It further demanded that students in the final year be “promoted based on past performance with 10% extra marks since it is observed that students improve their performance in the final year.”
The NSUI meanwhile suggested that universities may seek additional funds from PM Cares fund where teachers and university staff contributed.
It stated that “Students are the future of this country and their future shouldn’t be uncertain and dark due to this unprecedented crisis,” and expressed hope that the universities will take into consideration the demand of thousands of students and do the needful.
